The ribbon-cutting will mark the official "grand opening" of That Discount Place on Irving Avenue.
Mayor Dennis Pilla will join shoppers, local dignitaries and shop owner Jane Stout for a ribbon-cutting ceremony at That Discount Place this morning. That Discount Place is described as an eclectic shop where grocery shopping is part bargain-hunting and part treasure-hunting. The shelves are stocked with food and household items at drastically reduced prices due to small imperfections, past "sell by" dates and damaged packaging. Click here to read Tuesday's feature on the store. The ribbon-cutting is today at 10 a.m. The store is located at 155 Irving Ave., with the entrance and parking lot on the nearby Pearl Avenue side. Claiming your business on Patch offers huge rewards.
Call it a thoroughly modern dilemma. You can get any style of shoe delivered right to your door in 24 hours via the Internet, but must sort through five pages of random Google results just to find the right number for the pizza joint down the street. Oh and P.S. the hours on some robo-generated listing are completely wrong. Well Patch would hate to see anyone pizza-less and hungry (or without those killer boots) so that's why we launched Port Chester Patch in June of 2010 with the area's most comprehensive and detailed business directory, called "Places." You can find descriptions, hours, what credit cards are accepted, even parking — all verified by an actual human being, and all 100 percent local. And no more driving around to a shop …

Rye Brook-based In-Things, which specializes in handmade fashion, has opened up a pop-up store for the holiday season.
Every once in a while, some heartening economic news pops up amid the gloom of the recession. This time, the good news is extremely local. Local retailer SAACHI by In-Things, normally an e-commerce shop based out of a Rye Brook office, has opened up a satellite office in Greenwich through the end of December. This pop-up store is the sole storefront for displaying a unique, handmade line of fashion accessories by the online small business. The fashion accessory pieces, according to marking manager Paulina Flores, “embody true Indian artisanship with a modern edge.” Pieces have been featured in magazines and television, including the Oprah show. The Greenwich storefront features everything available on the website including the most popular…

Katonah resident Lynn Siegel launches Charity Panda as a new way to allow hosts and guests to fundraise through celebrations.
“I wanted to create an easy way for people to give to causes they care about—and to know that every bit helps,” said Lynn Siegel, 47, founder of a new website that links electronic invitations with charities. Charity Panda, which officially launched in November, is a service that Siegel created to provide party-givers an opportunity to plan a celebration while inspiring their guests to donate. The Katonah resident and mother of three said she's loved hosting big parties for her kids over the years, but has long felt there could be a way to give these milestone events an even bigger meaning. “We found that our kids—though they love to get presents like anyone else—felt more gratified and excited when they asked their friends to help …

Senator brings her roundtable discussions to the White Plains YWCA.
Treating women fairly on the job not only benefits them but improves the workplace and strengthens the economy, Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand said Friday. They traditionally seek consensus, creating a more harmonious work environment, she told about 60 women at an economic-empowerment roundtable. “We make a workplace a better place,” she observed, “just by our nature.” Addressing a longstanding workplace inequity—less pay for the same job— Gillibrand said studies show women have achieved a number of economic advances. Nevertheless, she said, they continue to make only 78 cents for every dollar men take home. African-American and Hispanic women face an even wider gap. Simply by ending the practice, she said, the nation’s Gross Domestic Product …

Police are warning holiday shoppers to be careful while using Westchester ATMs after uncovering an elaborate ATM skimming scheme they say netted a group of thieves about $1 million over the last few months. A joint task force involving the Westchester County Police, United States Secret Service and nine local police departments worked together to make five arrests. The scheme involved the placement of "dip readers", which read ATM cards when they are placed in a machine, paired with a small pin-hole camera used to obtain card-holders' pin numbers, police said. The obtained personal information was then copied onto blank cards and used to make withdrawals at another bank. Police believe those arrested are low-level criminals working for a …
