Ridge Hill Lord & Taylor: New Store Took Three Years Of Planning

The newest store at Ridge Hill had its ribbon-cutting ceremony Friday morning

Bruce Ratner first met Richard Baker three years ago at a convention in Las Vegas. Baker, governor and chief executive of the Hudson's Bay Company, told Ratner, chairman and chief executive of Forest City Ratner Companies, he might be interested in bringing a Lord & Taylor department store to Ridge Hill, one of 32 properties owned and operated by in the New York metro area by Forest City. Hudson's Bay Company owns Lord & Taylor. Nine months after that, the two had an agreement that the department store would come to Ridge Hill, and on Friday morning the store officially opened.  “That was in 2009, when the world was really in trouble and nobody really thought about making any deals of anything,” Ratner said. “But nine months later, we sat …

Westchester Looks to Grow Business Base [VIDEO]

County looks to attract and encourage small and medium-sized business owners.

Giving businesses the tools to succeed in Westchester County was the focus of a marketing campaign launched in Elmsford Monday. "We fight because we believe you can always do better," stated Laurence Gottlieb, director of the county's Office of Economic Development. He went on to outline a plan to help small and medium-sized businesses start up and thrive in Westchester. With Captain Lawrence Brewing Company's new tasting room as the backdrop, business leaders from around the county gathered to check out Grow, a publication from the county that likens growing a business to maintaining a garden. "We want to build our bench strength as that critical economic engine by helping individuals who have that spark of entrepreneurial spirit—to feed …

Video Recognition Leads to Gas Station Robberies Arrest

The following information does not indicate a conviction.

A man believed to have robbed Thornwood and Elmsford gas stations on March 1 has been arrested, according to Kieran O'Leary of the Westchester County Department of Public Safety. John Allen, a 40-year-old Yonkers resident, was arrested at his home after police arrived at approximately 1:30 a.m. this morning, O'Leary said. Investigators from the county, Town of Mount Pleasant, Village of Elmsford and U.S. ATF unit performed the arrest. "He initially refused to open the door," O'Leary said. "Yonkers ESU was called as a precaution, but the guy did surrender without incident at 1:43 a.m." Police also impounded a red Jeep Liberty believed to be the vehicle Allen used to arrive and leave the scenes, at the home. "I'm grateful we made an arrest …

If You Own or Love a Small Business in Port Chester, Read This

Claiming your business on Patch offers huge rewards.

Call it a thoroughly modern dilemma. You can get any style of shoe delivered right to your door in 24 hours via the Internet, but must sort through five pages of random Google results just to find the right number for the pizza joint down the street. Oh and P.S. the hours on some robo-generated listing are completely wrong. Well Patch would hate to see anyone pizza-less and hungry (or without those killer boots) so that's why we launched Port Chester Patch in June of 2010 with the area's most comprehensive and detailed business directory, called "Places." You can find descriptions, hours, what credit cards are accepted, even parking — all verified by an actual human being, and all 100 percent local. And no more driving around to a shop …

Local E-Biz Goes Brick and Mortar for Holidays

Rye Brook-based In-Things, which specializes in handmade fashion, has opened up a pop-up store for the holiday season.

Every once in a while, some heartening economic news pops up amid the gloom of the recession. This time, the good news is extremely local. Local retailer SAACHI by In-Things, normally an e-commerce shop based out of a Rye Brook office, has opened up a satellite office in Greenwich through the end of December. This pop-up store is the sole storefront for displaying a unique, handmade line of fashion accessories by the online small business. The fashion accessory pieces, according to marking manager Paulina Flores, “embody true Indian artisanship with a modern edge.” Pieces have been featured in magazines and television, including the Oprah show. The Greenwich storefront features everything available on the website including the most popular…
