Join in the fight this Sunday, April 10 at Rye Town Park to help raise awareness and research for pancreatic cancer.
When an ill-researched cancer took her mother's life two years ago, a Rye woman brought a community together to fundraise for a cure. Tara Shanes-Hernandez hopes for a repeat performance this Sunday, April 10, when she gears up to organize the Second Annual Westchester Pancreatic Cancer Research Walk as a tribute to her mother and life-long advocate of helping others, Gigi Shanes-Hernandez. “I’ve just continued her drive and devotion to helping others,” she said of her mother’s legacy. More than 500 people expected to come together for the walk this weekend at Rye Town Park and Playland Park in Rye. Shanes-Hernandez said she hopes the event will not only raise money, but help inform people about the little-understood cancer. “It can …

The church and the art center held an "Empty Bowls" fundraising event on Sunday.

The event, which took place at Rye Presbyterian Church, is a local tradition in support of a national organization called Empty Bowls that works to raise awareness about hunger. The annual event featured local artists molding bowls out of clay to raise money. The effort has amounted to more than $50,000 in donations over the years for the Town of Rye Interfaith Soup Kitchens in Port Chester. As a way of concluding its community service and outreach month, the Clay Art Center in Port Chester had its potters work with young members of Rye Presbyterian to organize the event at the …

Teachers and staff play the Harlem Wizards in a friendly fundraiser for the Port Chester Middle School PTA.
Principal Lou "Coney Island' Cuglietto got more than he bargained for last night at the PC Pride vs. Harlem Wizards basketball game when he went to shoot a foul shot and was greeted with a side-splitting attempt to rattle his game. Cuglietto was lining up his shot when two Wizards players decided to play tug-of-war with the waistband of his basketball shorts, a move you won't see in the NBA. Port Chester faculty took the court Thursday against the Harlem Wizards for a night of alley-oops, trick balls and theatrical displays, all for a good cause – the game was a fund-raiser for the Port Chester Middle School PTA. For $10 a ticket, kids could have a chuckle watching 15 of their teachers, coaches and principals drive to the basket and fine-…

The charity game will feature thundering dunks, alley oops and trick shots while raising money for the middle school's PTA.
How's your science teacher's jump shot? Port Chester kids will get to see their teachers, coaches and administrators in action Thursday as they take the court bearing the name "PC Pride" for a friendly basketball contest with the Harlem Wizards. Like the Harlem Globetrotters, the Wizards play a style of basketball that combines theatric athleticism with comedy – basketballs revolving on fingertips, jaw-dropping trick shots and dribbling artistry. The team was formed in 1962 and travels the country for school programs, special events and charity fund-raisers. PC Pride will take the court against the Wizards at 7 p.m. at the Port Chester Middle School gym. Teachers and staff have even taken on hoops-themed nicknames for the game – Tsunami …

Sunday's "Walk for Wounded Veterans" raised money for service dogs, trained companions for veterans who have lost limbs in combat.
People from across Westchester gathered in Yonkers Sunday to raise money for service dogs for wounded veterans. The first annual "Walk for Wounded Veterans" was held at Tibbets Brook Park in Yonkers. In addition to the fund-raiser, attendees got to mingle with recent veterans who already have service dogs. The fully-trained dogs cost between $25,000 and $30,000, organizers said, and the Tower of Hope Foundation provides the animals to veterans at no cost. On Sunday, organizers were hoping to raise about $60,000 to purchase two more dogs for injured service members. Phil Bauer, a recently retired Army veteran, rattled off a list of ways his service dog helps him in daily life. But the dog means more to him than simply the ability to fetch …

After volunteering in a flood-ravaged area of Brazil, Lauri Francis decided she could do more for kids there, and a charity was born.
After taking a flight to Rio de Janeiro to volunteer in a flood-ravaged area, Lauri Francis found herself in a run-down school library, helping the librarian tape up old books that were falling apart. "Harry Potter was nowhere to be found," Francis said. "Books are a rarity [in Brazil]. For the price of one book here, you can buy two to three books back home." It was a humble beginning for the charity Francis founded, Blessings for Brazil. Inspired by her experiences as a volunteer at the Solar School in Rio, Francis started small -- she began collecting donations from friends, family and acquaintances to buy new books for the children at Solar. Less than two years later, Blessings for Brazil is an international effort, with volunteers in …
