Since October, about 150 new families have been depending on the Carver Center's food pantry.
The Carver Center's food pantry distributes about 50,000 pounds of food each month. That's a weight equal to 14 Jeep Grand Cherokees. Or more than 100 sumo wrestlers. Or a World War II tank. But even that jaw-dropping amount of food isn't enough as more families depend on the Port Chester community center to keep them from going hungry. Since October of 2011, the number of families using the food pantry has climbed from 450 to 575 or more, said Tarin Gonzalez, the pantry manager. That's about 1,350 people total. Carver Center's food pantry needs pasta, canned fruits, tomato sauce, peanut butter, jelly, rice and other kitchen staples. An urgent post on the Carver Center's blog last week asked for donations as shelves in the pantry "are very…

With the holiday season ahead and more people avoiding malls in favor of online shopping, Port Chester residents can help support one of the village's most vital charities with the click of a mouse. The Carver Center now participates in the Give Back program, an online portal that allows people to shop and benefit their favorite charities at the same time. By clicking a widget at the bottom of the Carver Center's homepage, supporters can shop at 400 online retailers while a percentage of each purchase goes to the community center. The online retailers include big names like K-Mart, Circuit City and Estee Lauder, as well as direct online merchants for things like wine, flowers, books, movies and more. As the Give Page site notes, "Small …

The gift is the largest donation in the college's history.
Talk about generosity. An anonymous donor has made an unrestricted $5 million donation to Manhattanville College. The money, which will be donated over three years, is the biggest donation the college has ever accepted, said school officials. The donation will be used to benefit the school's "highest priority strategic initiates", a school statement read. "We are delighted to receive this wonderful gift that will help Manhattanville achieve its mission, ‘to educate students to be ethical and socially-responsible leaders in a global community,” Interim President Jon C. Strauss said in a statement. A school statement indicated that at least a portion of the money received will be placed in a fund for the school's next permanent president, …

Losing your home and all your possessions in a fire is hard enough; going through that ordeal when you have a baby on the way and a family to house is even worse. Trustee Luis Marino is hoping Port Chester continues its tradition of banding together for local disaster victims as he hosts a fundraiser and drive for the victims of last week's Midland Avenue fire this Sunday at the South End firehouse. A family of four, with two young children, and a family of five with a baby on the way were both left homeless. Marino said one family has found an apartment – although at a rental price far higher than their previous home – while the second family is still looking for permanent lodging. Marino and the Port Chester Fire Department will hold a …

After volunteering in a flood-ravaged area of Brazil, Lauri Francis decided she could do more for kids there, and a charity was born.
After taking a flight to Rio de Janeiro to volunteer in a flood-ravaged area, Lauri Francis found herself in a run-down school library, helping the librarian tape up old books that were falling apart. "Harry Potter was nowhere to be found," Francis said. "Books are a rarity [in Brazil]. For the price of one book here, you can buy two to three books back home." It was a humble beginning for the charity Francis founded, Blessings for Brazil. Inspired by her experiences as a volunteer at the Solar School in Rio, Francis started small -- she began collecting donations from friends, family and acquaintances to buy new books for the children at Solar. Less than two years later, Blessings for Brazil is an international effort, with volunteers in …
