'People of Port Chester' Photography Exhibition to Open Saturday

"People of Port Chester" will run Dec. 7 to Jan. 4 at two locations, Village Laundromat at 37 North Main St. and Miranda Arts Project Space at 6 North Pearl St.

A man wearing a sandwich board—unless you’re an artist, that may seem an unlikely source of inspiration, especially for an exhibition that’s intended to spotlight the heart and soul of a community.

But for photographer Shayok Mukhopadhyay of White Plains, the man standing outside his own business captured the spirit of the village: “He happily posed with his kids,” according to a press release on an exhibition that will open Saturday in Port Chester.

“The object of his project is to build a portrait of a community that in many ways is responsible for the upkeep and entertainment of surrounding affluent towns.”

The exhibition—“People of Port Chester”—will run Dec. 7 to Jan. 4 at two locations, Village Laundromat at 37 North Main St. and Miranda Arts Project Space at 6 North Pearl St.

Mukhopadhyay earlier this year earned a $2,500 Arts Alive grant from ArtsWestchester for “Port Chester Works.”

With “People of Port Chester,” the photographer says he hopes “that the photographs will feed back into the community’s pride in itself, and make those outside aware of it.”

“The laundromat venue was chosen with a view to making the work more accessible to the community,” the press release said.

Mukhopadhyay says he uses a 4x5 view camera “whose technology has not changed since photography was invented”—a slow process that allows the artist to engage with his subjects. They include small business owners as well as day laborers.
