Port Chester Youth Baseball League Fun Run Kicks Off 2012 Season

Before the first pitch of the season is thrown, players and families in the get a chance to stretch their legs — and raise some money for the league.

The league, in is ninth season as an independent organization, has its annual on Saturday at . Registration is at 9 a.m. and the first run, a 1-miler, kicks off at 10 a.m., with a 3-miler starting at 10:30 a.m.

The event is a way for players and families to join in a league rally before season play begins, according to Chris Swallen, a Port Chester Youth Baseball League vice president. At the Fun Run, players also pick up their uniforms from their coaches for the 2012 season.

As for the new season, the sound of “Play ball!” will be heard on April 28 as the league’s four divisions hit the field. PCYBL’s programs include T-Ball for 4-to-6-year-olds, the Rookie division for 7- and 8-year-olds, the Minors division for 9- and 10-year-olds and the Majors division for players 11 and 12 years old.

Saturday’s Fun Run costs $10 for adults, $5 for kids 15 and under, or $25 for an entire family. Participants in the Fun Run also seek sponsors for their groups, with the proceeds going toward supporting the league.

To encourage participation, Swallen said the first 100 people to sign in for the Fun Run on Saturday get a free Fun Run t-shirt.

While most of those who join in the Fun Run are league players and family members, Swallen said everyone in the community is invited to Lyon Park for the Fun Run and the event is a great way for anyone who might be interesting in becoming a volunteer with the league to meet officials and supporters of the league. Information on volunteering is also available on the league’s web site.

The Fun Run is set to run rain or shine.
