Neri's Bakery Helps Leukemia and Lymphoma Society Raise $4K

The Port Chester bakery donated buttercream-covered vanilla cupcakes for the group's "Cupcakes For A Cure" fund-raiser.

Usually, cupcakes and marathons don't go together.

Maria Madaffari was training with friends for a marathon fund-raiser in San Francisco when members of the group thought of an indulgent idea: Sell cupcakes, and raise money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

Brett Neri of in Port Chester helped make it happen. Neri's donated 300 buttercream-covered vanilla cupcakes decorated for Valentine's Day, and the Westchester County chapter of The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society; Team in Training sold the treats to passersby in The Westchester mall.

Fifteen volunteers sold cupcakes, raffle tickets and t-shirts, raising almost $4,000 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society on Feb. 11.

Members of the Westchester County chapter train together for marathon fund-raisers. Some ran in January's New York City marathon, and others are scheduled to run in the New Jersey Marathon later this month. Each member, Madaffari said, is running in memory of someone who had cancer.
