Port Chester Fights Hunger One Step At A Time

CROP Hunger Walk set for Sunday

The third annual Greenwich/Port Chester CROP Hunger Walk is set for Sunday at 2 p.m., when  community members are urged to join with schools, churches and community service organizations from Greenwich and Port Chester to battle hunger.

Participants are set to gather at the First Presbyterian Church of Greenwich, 1 West Putnam Ave., in Greenwich for an easy walk down the avenue and back up Mason Street, concluding at the Second Congregational Church, 139 East Putnam Ave.

The purpose of the walk is to raise funds to combat hunger around the world, with 75 percent of the funds raised to go Church World Service (CWS), an organization that for more than 60 years has helped fight worldwide poverty, hunger and disease, and also provides emergency materials and funding following natural or man-made disasters.

The remaining funds are returned by CWS to the local community, with Neighbor to Neighbor in Greenwich and Carver Center in Port Chester each sharing a portion of the funds raised. In 2011, the Greenwich/Port Chester CROP Hunger Walk raised more than $21,000. The goal for 2012 is $25,000.

Organizers say many enthusiastic walkers/fundraisers are needed to succeed in reaching that amount. Join the walk, sponsor a walker or walk team and learn more about this year’s walk by visiting the walk’s website at www.cropwalkonline.org/greenwichct.

CROP stands for “Communities Responding to Overcoming Poverty,” and many organizations in the Greenwich and Port Chester communities are involved in the planning and implementation of this year’s walk. These are joined by the Alan Shawn Feinstein Fund, which annually contributes to hunger relief programs.
