[PHOTO GALLERY] Battle Begins for Golden Gloves Title

Men in the 165 lb class squared off; women battled in the 125 lb class.

The Daily News Golden Gloves Boxing series returned to Rockland County as the Joseph T. St. Lawrence Community, Health & Sports Center in Hillburn hosted several bouts before a large crowd.

Men in the 165 lb class squared off; women battled in the 125 lb class in this Week 1 action.

Golden Gloves action comes to Westchester at the Yonkers PAL on Wednesday, Feb. 20.

Other communities wish for such a generous soul. Mr. Carriere may, in fact, be a very pleasant and admired friend to many, but his performance at the debate was cringingly embarrassing. I actually felt for the poor man because he was clearly at a complete loss ... and tried to rely on the power of his personality instead of concrete knowledge of the PC schools. It failed miserably. Those who goaded Mr. Carriere into this race can't possibly be his friends. Friends would never be so cruel as to expose someone to such total embarrassment.

Linda T., I would guess Mrs. Brakewood lives in Port Chester if she is running for the Port Chester…Read More Board of Ed. Even if the schools had to impose an austerity budget, your taxes would still go up. The state has more control in these matters than you think.

Linda, the per pupil expenditure in PC schools is the lowest in Westchester and Rockland counties…Read More ... by about $2,000 per student. The issue is two fold. First, our property values are not as strong as our neighbors, so our homes have a higher levy in order to fund the schools. Second, and more important, is that the reliance on property taxes slams moderate income communities like PC. We need for the state to move to an income tax to fund schools. Scream at your legislators ... not the BoE.
