Payback: Rams Avenge Volleyball Loss to Trojans

The Port Chester Rams Volleyball team went head to head with the Blind Brook Trojans in their second meeting of the season Tuesday at Blind Brook High School. Port Chester prevailed 3-1.

Port Chester's varsity volleyball team avenged a loss to Blind Brook, defeating the Trojans 3-1 in a four-game set on Tuesday at Blind Brook High School.

In their last meeting on September 28, Blind Brook halted Port Chester's three-game winning streak.

But Tuesday was a different story as the Rams capitalized on their only opportunity to redeem themselves this season against their cross-town rivals.

This time around, the Rams brought an energy the team lacked in the last contest, said Port Chester Coach Kathy Federici.

"They were intense," she said. "They all stepped up and did what they needed to."

After a 25-17 loss the first game, the Rams were a different team.

Confidence and determination have been an issue for the Rams throughout the season, but the consistency was there throughout the rest of the evening.

"They finally let the mistakes go and played," Federici said.

The 4-9 Rams never trailed after tying and eventually taking a 3-2 lead early in the second game to prevail 25-17 and force a third game.

It was the same scenario until the Trojans pulled to within 23-20 before the Rams finished it off 25-20 heading into the fourth game.

The Rams clinched the match in the final game of the afternoon, 25-22, but not without another run from the Trojans, who tied and led 6-5 due to a Port Chester fault.

The Rams then tied it at 14-14, then took the lead for good en route to a 25-22 victory.

Blind Brook Coach Justin Goldstein said his players lost their groove.

"We came out focused and we just lost the momentum," he said.

Yumiko Phillips and Alyson Lorys led the Rams with seven kills. Lorys also contributed two digs while Phillips tallied one block. Jessica Fitchben had four kills and three digs.

Hayley Groglio led the Trojans with 12 digs. Olivia Brettschneider had eight. Alysa Piperis had 10 kills.

It doesn't get any easier for the Trojans in their next league matchup at 4:30 p.m. Thursday at Rye Neck. The Rams hope to keep their own momentum alive when they host non-league opponent Peekskill Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. in the first of their last five games before sectional play begins.
