Scarinci, Giordano lift Jaspers in Battle of the Bronx

Freshman pitcher Michael Scarinci of Nanuet and senior Mike Giordano of Bedford turned in key relief efforts as the Manhattan College baseball team defeated Bronx rival Fordham University, 6-4, at Houlihan Park at Jack Coffey Field on the Rams’ campus.

Scarinci, who was graduated from Pearl River HS, got the final out of the sixth inning stranding a runner on third base, while Giordano, a Fox Lane HS alum, pitched an efficient eighth inning in his first appearance since March 24 after recovering from an injury.

Manhattan junior centerfielder Anthony Vega of Patchogue scored Joe Rock of Carmel with a bunt single in the fifth inning to break a scoreless battle.

Zach Small of Pelham Manor pitched one and a third innings in relief for the Rams, allowing no runs.

Manhattan (21-23) hopes to carry its momentum into the weekend when it returns to MAAC action at Fairfield University (20-23). The Jaspers will begin the three game set on Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at noon.

Fordham (19-29) opens a three-game series at home against the University of Rhode Island (26-19) on Friday at 7 p.m. The teams meet again on Saturday at 1 p.m., and on Sunday at noon.

Mortarboard musings

  • Junior attack Paul Moreau of Pearl River finished the season as the ninth-leading scorer on the Manhattan College lacrosse team. The Jaspers closed out a 5-9 campaign with a 12-4 loss to Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) opponent Siena at Gaelic Park in Riverdale. Moreau appeared in 11 games for the Jaspers, starting six, netting three goals and five assists for eight points.
  • Springfield College senior Greg Marakovits of Rocky Hill, CT, struck out 12 batters to propel the second-seeded Pride to a 3-1 victory over fourth-seeded Worcester Polytechnic Institute in an elimination game of the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Baseball Tournament at Govoni Field in Babson, MA. Freshman outfielder/catcher Ryan O’Rourke, a former two-sport standout at Tappan Zee HS, has played in nine games, starting four, since being elevated to the varsity. The Pride (20-14, 12-7) return to action on Saturday at Wheaton College to meet third-seeded Babson. The winner will challenge top-seeded Wheaton in the championship round later that afternoon.
  • Five Manhattanville baseball players received awards when the Freedom Conference announced their awards for this season. Senior Dan Fiorito was named the Conference’s Player of the Year and Michael Lyon was named the Conference’s Rookie of the Year. Chris Nardozzi, Johnny LoVetere and Elias Tsouristakis of New Rochelle were each named to the All-Conference Second Team.

Linda T., I would guess Mrs. Brakewood lives in Port Chester if she is running for the Port ChesterRead More Board of Ed. Even if the schools had to impose an austerity budget, your taxes would still go up. The state has more control in these matters than you think.
Aidan May 15, 2013 at 07:09 pm
Linda, the per pupil expenditure in PC schools is the lowest in Westchester and Rockland countiesRead More ... by about $2,000 per student. The issue is two fold. First, our property values are not as strong as our neighbors, so our homes have a higher levy in order to fund the schools. Second, and more important, is that the reliance on property taxes slams moderate income communities like PC. We need for the state to move to an income tax to fund schools. Scream at your legislators ... not the BoE.

I am concerned there is not enough attention to detail in the BOE budget overall and Mrs. BrakewoodRead More comment about keeping taxes affordable ... where does she live ? they are out of control and in my opinion the money we pay for taxes we should have the best looking schools anywhere ... just my opinion
