Daily Sports Digest: Giant Weekend Dominated By Local Wrestlers

The Top Spot:

Wrestling dominated the as teams from all over met up for the divisional tournament at Mahopac, Horace Greeley, Arlington or Harrison. Port Chester competed in Division 2 at Arlington.

Top seeded Kevin Rodriguez of Port Chester came away with the title in the 99 weight class after pinning Clarkstown North’s Brian Hong in less then a minute in the semi finals then beating Arlington’s Alfredo Olmedo in the finals.

Both Diego Giron (120) and Justin Karas (152) of Port Chester lost in the finals and came out of Saturday’s tournament with second place finishes.

The top four spots in each weight class in each division will head to sectionals next weekend.

Sport: Boys Basketball (Friday)

Game: Harrison vs. Port Chester

Score: Harrison Won 52-41

Highlights: Coby Leftkowitz continues to lead Harrison as the sophomore picked up 18 points in the win. Port Chester’s Tyrik Harris had 13 points in the loss.

Sport: Girls Basketball (Friday)

Game: Harrison vs. Port Chester

Score: Harrison Won 47-23

Highlights: Samantha Russo led Harrison in the low scoring affair with nine points as Kyle Leftkowitz picked up eight. Leandra Harris and D’Angela Covington each had nine points for Port Chester in the loss.

Sport: Boys Basketball (Saturday)

Game: Port Chester vs. Scarsdale

Score: Scarsdale Won 67-37

Highlights: Aleks Larsen had 15 points for Scarsdale and Andrew Crean and Greg Scacchi each had 13 points each in the win. Tim Brown led Port Chester with 12 points in the loss.

Bearcats snap slide, point to Red Storm

Sean Kilpatrick of White Plains, who leads the University of Cincinnati men’s basketball team with 15.4 points per game, poured in 16 as the Bearcats pulled away from DePaul to post a 74-66 Big East Conference win at Fifth Third Arena in Cincinnati.

Dion Dixon of Chicago also had 16 points for the Bearcats (16-7, 6-4), who ended a three-game losing streak before meeting St. John’s (10-13, 4-7) at Madison Square Garden on Wednesday at 7 p.m. The game will be televised on ESPNU.

Mistake-prone DePaul committed 18 turnovers, helping Cincinnati enjoy a 22-10 advantage in points off turnovers.

The Bearcats, the Big East leaders in 3-point field goals going into the game, missed their first eight before Kilpatrick, who also had four assists, connected with seven seconds left in the first half to cut DePaul's halftime lead to 38-36. They went 3-of -15 on 3-pointers for the game.

Mavericks succeed on alumni day

Senior forward Talia Beaulieu of Waldorf, MD, hit the game-winning shot with just two seconds remaining as the Mercy College women’s basketball team beat NYIT, 75-74, in Dobbs Ferry to notch its second East Coast Conference (ECC) victory of the season.

The Mavericks (2-18, 2-9 ECC) hope to build up some steam when they host Dominican College (9-10, 9-4) tonight at 5:30 p.m.

Aysha Williams of New Rochelle had nine points, four rebounds, four steals and two assists in 22 minutes against NYIT, while Jessica Biggs of Nanuet saw only nine minutes of action, contributing two steals and a defensive rebound.

Nyack rallies, falls short

Four Warriors posted double figures in scoring as the Nyack College men’s basketball team put up a valiant effort before bowing to Chestnut Hill College, 81-76, in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference contest in Philadelphia, PA.

Freshman guard Chris Hampton of Brooklyn led the way for Nyack with 21 points, a team-high seven assists and a team-high six rebounds.         

Sophomore Jose Pena-Benjamin of Rahway, NJ, scored 18 points with a team-high three steals, while freshman Khalid Samuels of Mount Vernon followed his career high in scoring against Bloomfield with a 17-point performance.

Senior forward Lafayette Curtis of Staten Island had 13 points and two blocked shots in the losing effort.

Nyack goes back to the well tonight in Wilmington, DE, to battle Goldey-Beacom College (11-8) at 7 p.m.

Bears are golden

Junior guard Damon Alston of New Britain, CT, scored a career high 21 points, and sophomore center Dennis Rinaldi of Harrison had 10  to lead the Western New England men’s basketball team to an 83-74 victory over Endicott in a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) contest at Beverly, MA.
This was the highest scoring total of the season for Western New England, which had four players in double figures and ended a three-game skid while raising its record to 7-13 overall and 4-10 in the conference.

Endicott (12-8, 7-6 CCC) led 41-36 at halftime and held an eight-point advantage at 58-50 before the Golden Bears turned it around.

WNU hosts Springfield College (13-6) tonight at 7 p.m.
