Monroe Mustangs return home with another crown

Kashay Barnes of Fredrick, MD, poured in 26 points and Aiyah Parham of Baltimore, MD, sank several clutch free throws down the stretch as the Monroe College women’s basketball team successfully defended its NJCAA Division II national championship in Peoria, IL

Barnes, who also had eight assists, was named tournament MVP as the Mustangs outlasted Lake Michigan 78-73 in a hard-fought final.

Ninth-seeded Monroe, coached by James Robinson Jr., led the whole game with a lead that rose to 18 in the second half. But the Indians, the seventh seed, were resolute and battled all the way back to take a 71-70 lead with 2:24 remaining.

The edge was short-lived however, as Parham answered at the foul line as Monroe finished another championship season with a glimmering 31-6 record.

“We had many things happen to us this year that might have made some people think we couldn't do this,” Coach Robinson was quoted as saying. “Maybe something significant was when our point guard tore her ACL right before the nationals; but this championship is about the power of belief, belief in yourself and belief in your teammates. Our players worked as hard as they could to make this happen and they deserve this title and all the accolades they get.”

Supporting Barnes’ MVP showing, Parham poured in 22 points and pulled down six rebounds while Jasmine McRoy of Gaithersburg, MD, had 21 points and six rebounds.
Parham and Verdine Warner of Brooklyn were named to the all-tournament team and Coach Robinson received the Lorene Ramsey Coach of the Tournament award from Coach Ramsey herself, a pioneer in women’s sports and one of the most successful college basketball coaches of all-time.
