College Sports Notebook:

Walker recognized for defensive prowess

Alaina Walker, an alumna of Albertus Magnus, was one of three players on the St. Bonaventure University women’s basketball team to be recognized by the Atlantic-10 conference.

On the heels of a record-breaking regular season, Coach Jim Crowley named the league's coach of the year.

Seniors Jessica Jenkins of Marion, OH, and Megan Van Tatenhove of Sheboygan Falls, WS, were chosen to the A-10 first team and all-Academic team, while Walker, a junior from Pomona, earned a spot on the all-Defensive team.

Walker becomes the first player in program history to be named to the all-Defensive team – an honor incepted by the A-10 for the 2001-02 season.

“Being named to not only the first team but also the all-Academic team is a very special honor for both Meg and Jess, and one they have worked very hard for and are deserving of,” Crowley said on the school’s website. “I'm also very happy for Alaina to receive the recognition she certainly deserves. She has been terrific defensively all year and is the true catalyst for all that we do."
In leading the Bonnies to a 27-2 record and perfect 14-0 mark in the A-10 for the first time in program history, Crowley was recognized by his peers in the league for his second coach of the year award in the last four years. Crowley won the award in 2008-09, and has led SBU to 20 or more wins in each of the last four seasons.
The honor for Walker is the first of her career and comes as the Bonnies lead the A-10 in scoring defense for the third consecutive season. SBU is allowing just 53 points per game, and if that average holds it will set an A-10 single-season record for scoring defense. The current record of 53.1 per outing is held by the 1999-2000 Saint Joseph's squad.
Walker routinely matches up with the opposing team’s best offensive player and ranks second on the roster in defensive rebounding, having pulled down 117 this year, just two fewer than Van Tatenhove. Perhaps her best defensive effort of the year came in a win at West Virginia as she held Taylor Palmer to just three points on 1-of-14 shooting – her worst performance of the campaign – after Palmer scored 33 in WVU’s season opener.

St. Bonaventure earned the No. 1 seed at this weekend’s 2012 Buick A-10 Women’s Basketball Championship in Philadelphia and will commence action on Saturday, at noon against either eighth-seeded La Salle or ninth-seeded Xavier.

Mortarboard musings

  • Attacker Chrissy Gutenberger of Stony Point and freshman goalkeeper Christina Fiorinelli of Massapequa were honored with weekly awards by the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. Gutenberger, who leads the Jaspers with 10 points, was named the MAAC’s offensive player of the week. The senior ranks 10th in the country in goals per game (4.50) while being tied for 32nd in total goals. The Jaspers meet Long Island University in Brooklyn on Saturday at noon, and then welcome Brown University to Riverdale on Sunday at 1 p.m.
  • The St. Thomas Aquinas College track and field team finished ninth in the final East region rankings. Mike Abelard of Spring Valley finished fifth in the Region in the 60 with a time 7.01 and sixth in the Region in the 200 with a time of 21.84.  The Lady Spartans finished 15th in the region.  Highlights include Chelsea Klinger of Owego finishing fifth in the region in the pentathlon. On the National level George Erazo of North Babylon and Abelard just missed the cuts for the National Championships.
  • Andrew Hancsak of Lake Worth, FL, had a tie-breaking triple, and Matt Marotta of Suffern went four strong innings in relief as the St. Thomas Aquinas College baseball team defeated Bloomfield (NJ) College at Provident Bank Park (PBP) in Pomona. The Spartans host Post University on Friday at PBP at 3 p.m. On Saturday, STAC travels for another non-conference tilt--a twin-bill at Adelphi University--before taking off on their annual weeklong trip to Florida for six games before returning home.
  • The Purchase College baseball team looks to snap a four-game losing streak on Saturday when it meets Worchester State College in a noon doubleheader at The Rock Turf Complex in Chester. The Panthers, coming off a two losses to St. John Fisher, visit Yeshiva University on Sunday for another noon twin-bill. Senior Frank Fiumara of Port Chester and senior Mike Marrone of Pleasantville each had RBI in a first-game loss to St. John Fisher. In the second game, senior pitcher Eric Cuadrado of Yonkers shook off early trouble, allowing only one run in his last three innings of work.

Weekly Sports Poll:

Major League Baseball lost a great earlier this month, former Met and Expo Gary Carter.

Two decades years after he retired, Carter was elected into the baseball Hall of Fame and many consider him one of the best catchers of all time.

But where do you think “Kid” ranks among the best New York back stops of all time?

Let us know your thoughts below in this week's sports poll.
