Updated - Basketball: Greeley Loses to Port Chester; Tense Incident Involving Fan Averted

Port Chester's victory ended with a confrontation from an upset Greeley fan. However, it was quickly defused by Greeley AD and players before anything physical happened.

Correction: The early story of the game described there being an altercation between several players from Port Chester and several Greeley fans. Only one Greeley fan was upset and a verbal frustration and confrontation on the fan's behalf was diffused. We have updated the story to reflect the accounts and findings from the athletic directors. Patch regrets the error.

The Port Chester Ram handed the Horace Greeley Quakers their second loss of the season Thursday. The two teams proved evenly matched through a fast-paced game which saw the Ram's take a one-point lead into the locker room at halftime.

The teams traded baskets in the second half matching three-pointers and battling hard for inside shots.  But the Rams began to take advantage of the Quakers' turnovers and opened up an eight -point lead late in the fourth quarter.

Greeley's Matt Townsend and Port Chester's Anthony Ordonez each led their team in scoring with 31 points apiece.

The victory gave way to a tense atmosphere, however, when a Quakers fan shouted obscenities, walked towards the teams while they were shaking hands and confronted a Port Chester player, according to Greeley Athletic Director Steve Young. Young said that the person was separated and that he talked with him privately. Greeley players helped prevent things from escalating, and there was no fight, according to Young.

Port Chester Athletic Director Joe Durney said he spoke to his counterpart at Horace Greeley - Young said they were leaving messages instead of talking - who reported that a Greeley fan walked onto the court after the game and "exchanged words and had to be separated."

"The Greeley [athletic director] indicated he did address the Greeley student, and our coach reported he met with his team afterwards to congratulate them on their restraint and excellent conduct," Durney wrote. "Everyone reports that the issue was de-escalated in a very short time and is now resolved."

"My team acted with a lot of class and I told them that," Young said about how they handled the matter.
