Victory Over Beacon Gives Rams Best Start in a Decade

The Port Chester High School Rams earned a decisive victory against Beacon High School's Bulldogs in varsity football Saturday. The final score was 20-8.

Port Chester's varsity football squad is off to its best start in a decade.

With their 20-8 victory over Beacon High School on Saturday, the Rams improved to 2-0 on the season. They'll take their auspicious start to Pearl River on Saturday and look to avenge a loss from the last time those teams met.

"We're playing great, physical football right now," a pleased Coach Gren Domestico told his squad after the game.

But Domestico doesn't want his players to bask in the glow of a short undefeated stretch, and told his players to think of next week's game as the opener all over again. The Rams, Domestico said, need to be "1 and 0" after next Saturday's contest.

Port Chester was able to run the same trap play between more than a dozen times throughout the game, taking advantage of delayed reactions on the part of the Bulldogs.

The Rams moved the ball down the field early in the first quarter in a drive sparked by running back Sebastian Obando's 36 yard-run. Obando caught quarterback Ryan Roman's pass and settled into the end zone for the first touchdown  of the game at the 9:04 mark.

Robert Diaz's extra point gave the Rams a 7-0 lead. Roman was stellar again on a completed pass reception to wide receiver Christian Nichols at the eight yard line. Runningback Zach Taylor then ran it in for the team's second touchdown of the day at 1:25. Another good extra point by Diaz put the score at 14-0.

Taylor started Port Chester's last touchdown drive in the second quarter with a six-yard gain at 7:04. The Ram defense held the Bulldogs scoreless in that quarter.

James McRae gave the Rams two more yards at the 6:32 mark before Taylor struck again soon after with a 14-yard run and a short three-yarder. Roman completed the drive on a seven yard quarterback sneak with under five minutes to play before the half, giving the Rams a 20-0 lead.

Beacon maintained possession of the football for the majority of the third quarter but the Ram defense continued to put them away, especially in the backfield. A Bulldog 15-yard gain put them within scoring range.

The Bulldogs put points on the board with 2:27 left to play in the fourth, but the hard work of the Ram backups held them scoreless the rest of the way en route to their 20-8 victory.

Port Chester looks to redeem last year's loss against Pearl River Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
