The Class of 2012: Local Students Graduate

Families celebrate graduation day.

Chamel Guzman of Port Chester graduated on Friday, June 1 from Convent of the Sacred Heart, an independent, Catholic day school for girls in Greenwich, CT.

She will attend Fairfield University in the fall.

NBC News Correspondent Tom Brokaw delivered the commencement address to the 163rd graduating class. He said this will be “the century when women finally take their rightful and fully recognized place in society here and around the world.”

The Class of 2012 included 61 graduates, all of whom will attend four-year colleges and universities in the fall.

Founded in 1848, Convent of the Sacred Heart is one of 22 U.S. schools in the Network of Sacred Heart Schools. Located at 1177 King Street in Greenwich, Connecticut, Sacred Heart has an enrollment of 775 girls from preschool through 12th grade.

Peter Paniccia Receives Degree from Western New England University

Peter D. Paniccia of Rye Brook received a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration degree from Western New England University in Springfield, Mass.

Western New England University is a private, independent, coeducational institution founded in 1919. Located on an attractive 215-acre suburban campus in Springfield, Massachusetts, Western New England University serves 3,700 students, including 2,550 full-time undergraduate students.  

Gerardo Espinoza of Port Chester Graduates from Albany Law School

Gerardo Espinoza of Port Chester graduated from Albany Law School at the school's 161st Commencement, held May 11, 2012, at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.

Espinoza earned a JD degree from Albany Law School, the oldest independent law school in the nation.

Albany Law School is a small, independent private school in the heart of New York state's capital since 1851.

Local Residents Graduate from Marist College

The following residents graduated from Marist College the weekend of May 18:

Danielle Fortino of Rye Brook received a Master of Arts degree in Educational Psychology.

Lauren Piccolo of Rye Brook received a Master of Arts degree in Museum Studies.

Marist is an independent comprehensive liberal arts college with an enrollment of 4,200 full-time undergraduate students.

Jillian McGowan of Port Chester Graduates from The University of Scranton

Jillian L. McGowan of Port Chester was among the nearly 900 University of Scranton (PA) students earning a bachelor's degrees at its undergraduate commencement on May 27 at the Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza in Wilkes-Barre.

McGowan majored in management in the Jesuit university's Kania School of Management.

Sister Patricia Eck, C.B.S., congregation leader of the Sisters of Bon Secours and chairperson of Bon Secours, Inc./Bon Secours Ministries Board of Directors, served as the principal speaker at The University of Scranton's 2012 undergraduate commencement. She also received an honorary degree from the University.

"What a great day it is to graduate – Pentecost," said Sr. Eck to the nearly 9,000 in attendance at the undergraduate ceremony. "As you go into the world, you have God's assurance that the Spirit is with you. If you remember nothing from this day, and this is a good possibility, remember that God's Spirit is always with you. No matter what, God's Spirit is always with you."

Shelby Faith Grotto Graduates from Colby-Sawyer College

Shelby Faith Grotto of Rye Brook graduated from Colby-Sawyer College in New London, NH, with a Bachelor of Science degree on Saturday, May 5 , 2012. Grotto majored in Child Development.

Colby-Sawyer College is a comprehensive college that integrates the liberal arts and sciences with professional preparation.

Shana Simmons of Port Chester Earns Bachelor of Arts From Dominican College

Port Chester resident Shana Simmons graduated from Dominican College in Orangeburg, NY, during the May 20 commencement ceremonies.

The aim of Dominican College is to promote educational excellence, leadership, and service in an environment characterized by respect for the individual and concern for the community.

Valentino, Yawitz graduate University of Rhode Island

At the University of Rhode Island's 126th Commencement on Saturday and Sunday, May 19-20, 2012, almost 3,000 undergraduate and 738 graduate students became the University's newest alumni.

Craig Alexander of Rye Brook Graduates from Quinnipiac University

Craig Alexander of Rye Brook earned a Bachelor of Science in Computer Information Systems from Quinnipiac University during the 81st undergraduate commencement exercises on May 20.

Quinnipiac in Hamden, CT, is a private, coeducational, nonsectarian institution located 90 minutes north of New York City and two hours from Boston.

Harris Brett of Rye Brook Earns Degree at Skidmore College

Harris Brett graduates at Skidmore College

Skidmore's Class of 2012, totaling 627 baccalaureate candidates, participated in the College's 101st Commencement Saturday, May 19, at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center.

Harris Brett of Rye Brook received a BSA degree .

Grace Burton, associate professor of Spanish, was chosen by the graduates to deliver the commencement remarks. A Skidmore faculty member since 1987, she was the recipient this year of the college's Ralph Ciancio Prize for Excellence in Teaching. Whether leading classes in introductory Spanish and intermediate language and literature, or working with advanced independent students, "language and literature come to life through Grace," noted a recent Skidmore graduate.

Others congratulating the graduates during the program were Skidmore President Philip Glotzbach, Janet Lucas Whitman '59, chair of the board of trustees, and Melvis Langyintuo, president of the Class of 2012.

Elinor Reina Earns Degree from the University of Vermont

Elinor L. Reina of Port Chester received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Theatre within the College of Arts & Sciences during May commencement ceremonies at the University of Vermont.

The university conferred degrees this year on an estimated 3,202 graduates, including 2,552 bachelor's, 429 master's, 94 doctoral, and 114 M.D. degree recipients, in addition to 13 post-baccalaureate certificates. Among degree recipients were students from 39 states 22 countries.
