SUNY Purchase Students Volunteer with Next Generation After School

The OASIS afterschool program and the Don Bosco Community Center in Port Chester welcomed 17 SUNY students in play and storytelling with the centers' youth.

Two dozen Liberal Arts & Sciences students from SUNY Purchase participated in the 12thannual Lights On Afterschool, a nationwide event to bring awareness of securing quality, affordable after school programs.

On Oct. 20, seven SUNY student volunteers went to the Don Bosco Community Center in Port Chester, where they focused on health, wellness and sportsmanship as they played wiffle ball with kids at the Center. The other 17 students volunteered at the  in Port Chester, where they participated in a storytelling activity with more than 100 children in the OASIS afterschool program.

In total, 7,500 after-school events took place across the country. In 2009, the not-for-profit Afterschool Alliance released a report called, “America After 3 p.m.” that provides a snapshot of what children do each day after school. According to the study, 21 percent of New York State school children participate in afterschool activities.
