School Calendar Highlights: Back to the Books

As Port Chester kids prepare for the first day of classes, local parents breath a sigh of relief.

Families across Port Chester will mark Labor Day with one last barbecue before fall officially arrives and kids head back to school.

Here are highlights and important dates as the school year kicks off:

Wednesday, Aug. 31: Board of Education Meeting

Port Chester's school board will meet at 7:30 p.m., in Room 229 at Port Chester High School.

Thursday, Sept. 1: Ice Cream Social at King Street School

What better way to meet new classmates and forge new friendships than over a bowl of ice cream? Kindergarten students at King Street School will get a chance to meet their classmates in a social setting at 1:30 p.m.

Thursday, Sept. 1 and Friday, Sept. 2: Staff Conferences

The last two days of summer for students, and the beginning of the school year for teachers and staff. Superintendent's conference days are scheduled for Thursday and Friday, where educators will put the final touches on this year's school plans.

Tuesday, Sept. 6: Freshman Orientation

Schools will open on Sept. 6 -- but only for students who are new to their respective schools. That means kindergartners, sixth-graders and ninth-graders will get a chance to ease in, learn the layouts of their new schools, and meet their classmates before the rest of the student population reports for classes the next day.

Wednesday, Sept. 7: School Begins

This is the official first day of classes for students, as older kids join sixth- and ninth-graders at Port Chester Middle School and Port Chester High School. It also marks the first PTA meeting of the fall for the high school, with a meeting scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

Thursday, Sept. 8: Board of Education Meeting

The school board will meet again on Sept. 8, addressing immediate concerns for fall as students wrap up their first few days at school.
