Port Chester Teacher Directs Sleepy Hollow High School Musical

Ease on down the road! Sleepy Hollow High School students are gearing up for three performances of the classic musical.

The Wiz is this year’s exciting high school musical pick. No less than 25 of our district students will take the stage under the leadership of Julie Colangelo for their three-show version of this classic.

There are many more students involved: with 18 kids helping on the crew and more than eight in the orchestra, that totals over 50 involved in the production.

Director Colangelo is the sixth grade teacher at Portchester Middle School, who says that she is having a "fantastic time helping the students of Sleepy Hollow bring these very well known characters to life and having them add their own little twist."

She gives all the credit to the students though, who run most of the production. "Led by stage manager Jack Titcomb, students not only perform in the show but they also run the light and sound boards, spotlights, move, build and paint the set, play in the orchestra and design and create costumes and publicity flyers.  They have truly  become a family and it has been a pleasure to work with all of them."

The 1975 hit retells L. Frank Baum's The Wonderful Wizard of Oz through an African-American lens. It won seven Tony awards on Broadway before various revival shows around the world and a subsequent movie adaptation by the same name in 1978. The movie starred Michael Jackson, Diana Ross, Lena Horne and Richard Pryor, among others.
