Port Chester Special Education Students Join in Special Workout

Students visit all-star cheer center in Greenwich.

“Let’s see that cartwheel again!” Coach Christopher Mendyka happily shouted at Spirit Zone Too in Greenwich, CT, as 16 students from Special Education classes at the Port Chester Middle School took part in a day long physical fitness program at the gym.

Spirit Zone Too is a tumbling and all-star cheer center that has a working relationship with teams and students from the Port Chester School District.  The Middle School Modified, High School Junior Varsity and Varsity Cheer Squads take part in tumbling classes at the facility.

During a recent visit, it was the Special Needs Athletes who took center stage.

“The field trip was a great collaboration between school and community.  It exposed our students to a new physical activity which promoted health and wellness”, said Special Education teacher Candace Munoz.

Special Education Teacher Sharla Kaufman added, “In conjunction with our Adaptive Daily Curriculum we were able to travel into the community, form new relationships with the Spirit Zone staff, and participate in a new and exciting learning experience.”

This also supports the students’ work in their Adaptive Physical Education classes as supervised by David Sheridan.

Use of the gym space was donated by Spirit Zone Too, 222 Mill St., Greenwich. Co- owner, Anne Aguiar Asta, along with coaches Chris Mendyka and Craig DeSaussure volunteered their coaching expertise.
