PCHS Nominated for 4 High School Theater Awards

Judges liked what they saw when they attended Port Chester High School's production of A Chorus Line last month.

Call it a case of life imitating art.

Port Chester High School students, who portrayed rising theater stars last month during a production of A Chorus Line, are seeing their own stars rise as they earned four nominations in the Metropolitan High School Theater Awards.

Student Jose Lopez was nominated for Outstanding Acting Performance, Rebecca Barnes earned a nomination for Outstanding Featured Ensemble Member, and teacher Josh Tenzer scored a nomination for Outstanding Direction by a Teacher. Parent Ruth Goldberg was nominated for Best Lobby Display to promote the production.

As the student cast geared up for the April production, it was obvious they were excited by the material and the opportunity to bring it to the stage.

"Everyone is really energetic and has gotten into it," said Rosie Saveltri, a cast member.

The awards are sponsored by the Helen Hayes Youth Theater and modeled after Broadway's Tony Awards. Port Chester student actors and theater participants were chosen from among dozens of high schools in Westchester, Rockland and Bergen counties. The Helen Hayes Youth Theater sends judges to watch high school performances, and in Port Chester they liked what they saw.

The awards ceremony is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on June 6, at the Paramount Center for the Arts in Peekskill.
