Past Presidents and 100th Day of School Cause for Celebration at Park Avenue

Park Avenue participates in a Past Presidents' Walk and make projects for the 100th day of the school year.

Temperatures reaching 60 degrees in mid- February is reason enough to take a walk, most would say.

On the advent of an upcoming holiday weekend commemorating our country's leaders, staff at Park Avenue School decided to take a Past Presidents' Walk around the building Friday morning.

For teachers, a hands-on activity like this one was also a great way to weave together lessons about American leaders like George Washington and Franklin D. Roosevelt out of the classroom’s four walls and into the spring-like air.

“We’ve been studying [U.S. Presidents] in class, so today’s walk is in memory of them,” said third-grade teacher, Michelle Santucci.

The walk was also part of a monthly movement to promote health and wellness.

Since September, grades K-5 have participated in outdoor activities—in December it was to celebrate winter, and in January the occasion was to commemorate Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Plus, after a harsh winter filled with several storms, warmer weather had everyone in the mood for some exercise this time around.

“We’ve been stuck inside the whole winter,” said student Dayanna Miranda.

Feeling the breeze outside wasn’t the only excitement happening this week, though.

While the older kids took a stroll with friends, kindergarten and first grade students did their part by hanging projects to honor their 100th Day of School.

Creativity shone through the hallways with one item representing each day since the first day of school.

Some students counted that many Goldfish crackers, SillyBandz, paperclips and even candles atop a Disney Princess-themed cake.
