Lots Opted Out of Common Core Testing Today

That included the children of Westchester County Executive Rob Astorino.

Rob and Sheila Astorino are among the many parents who had their children opt out of the New York state's English Language Arts test today as a protest against the implementation of the Common Core standards.

"We feel very strongly that our kids shouldn't be guinea pigs in a lab test," Astorino said on Fox News.

His announcement was greeted with cheers by folks on the I Refuse Facebook page.

"Good for him! Good for his family!" wrote Lara Flejter.

You can see his full explanation in a vimeo he posted on his gubernatorial campaign website.

Did you pull your kids from the test? Tell us why or why not in the comments.

I should point out that many (most?) liberals are also not happy with common core, but regardless there are those in this forum who leverage this topic as a springboard to spout their right wing idealogies. Loudly and repeatedly. Ad nauseum.

Astorino is simply a master of co-opting anything he can to get press and talking points for his campaign for gov. He is very, very good at promoting himself.

The Dept of Ed doesn't educate children. Smaller govt is the idea here, no intrusion or overreach. That's what CC is. NCLB was the same. Govt should leave everyone alone. Democrats and RINOs love big gov, and this is the result. Junk. Plus the teachers unions are in the way also. Can't leave them out.

Joe: it's "ad nauseam". You a product of Common Core? :>) You really think I am "right wing"? I thought I was "correct wing". I used to be a lefty radical. Education comes from the community - teachers, parents, kids AND credo. The federal government is not charged with directing education or ed. policy - that is local and always has been and always should be - it has produced great thinkers and doers. Lately, as "my" people (the "Stalinists") gained control, we have lost it - we have lost our edge and what it truly means to be American. Instead we are all touchy feely now and p.c. This is no good. and you know it. Save MAYBE for the AP kids, the Intel science crowd, our education of the youth has sunk to empty depths I never thought I'd see. So yes, I'd abolish the fed Dept of Education, save all that $$$, toss the bureaucrats out - let them find real jobs. and keep the $$ home. I trust in he People (and the courts). Regional variations in ed. policies? yeah, as long as the Constitution is upheld and respected and as long as EVERY SCHOOL teaches American Exceptionalism, values and the joys of liberty. THAT is American ed. PS: no database collection of the children's vitals, biometrics, metadata, ed. evals., test scores - nothing centralized - ever. It is tyranny to have such a database and centralized control over the children. Do not give the government powers it is not entitled to - do not acquiesce. You would? why? to what end?
