On May 14, about 750 students from several Westchester County Catholic schools participated in a graduation mass with His Eminence Timothy Cardinal Dolan, Archbishop of New York.

The following release is a recap of the celebration from the Archdiocese of New York:

His Eminence Cardinal Timothy Dolan celebrated Mass at Sacred Heart Church in Yonkers on May 14 with 750 graduating 8th graders from 24 elementary schools in Westchester County.

The graduation mass was the first for Central Westchester’s region of the Archdiocese of New York and included dozens of schools from central and southern Westchester.

As part of the Mass, Cardinal Dolan delivered a homily and recognized the special talents and achievements of the graduating students, many of whom will continue on to attend one of the 10 Catholic high schools in Westchester County. He spoke of the lifelong value of a Catholic education and the importance of living for others versus living for oneself.

“You’ve got the heights of your life waiting for you all,” Cardinal Dolan told the students at the end of the service. “But you can’t get to the heights without a good foundation. You’ve got it here in your Catholic schools.”

There are 9 regions in the Archdiocese of New York, which includes Manhattan, Staten Island, the Bronx and seven counties in the northern suburbs. The Central Westchester region serves 7,180 students from Pre-K3 through Grade 8 and includes students from Yonkers, White Plains, Mount Vernon, New Rochelle, Pelham, Port Chester, Larchmont, Elmsford, Tarrytown, Irvington, Rye and Hartsdale.

“Graduation is an exciting day for so many young people and their families and we’re pleased that Cardinal Timothy Dolan was such an integral part of it,” said Dr. Timothy McNiff, Superintendent of Schools for the Archdiocese of New York.
