District Teachers Say Goodbye: Larry Siena

Port Chester High School English teacher of 38 years to retire this month.

Larry Siena came to Port Chester as a student teacher in September of 1972 and completed his student teaching in December of that year.  Hired in September of 1973, he's been at the high school ever since.

This year, he's one of 26 retiring teachers saying farewell to the district.

“I never thought  I would be in one position for almost four decades”,  said Siena, “but  I always appreciated what the district did for me back then by offering me a teaching position , and the students and  parents that I’ve met over these many years were special.  Quite simply, I was very happy in the classroom here and never wanted to be anywhere else---unless it were a café in Europe!”

Over the years, Sienna has taken his students on trips from Seaside Heights, NJ to New York City.  His many trips abroad to Europe and elsewhere with students and adults are very special memories to him.

The tours are too numerous to mention here, but chances are if you can name it, Siena has taken his students there. He may be leaving the classroom, but have no fear, he leaves for Spain with another group this June and has a tour going to Costa Rica in February of 2012.

Larry and his wife are looking forward to a June 11 wedding for their daughter Elise Catherine, a kindergarten teacher these past eight years. Their son, Michael, a ten year veteran in education, is an assistant principal at a middle school in Wappingers Falls.

Larry will continue his work with his small but fulfilling fragrance business, Lorenzo Siena Fragrances, where he retails his men’s cologne online. The website features some of his former students at: www.LorenzoSienaFragrances.com.

Family, friends, fragrance, sunset dinners, travel (and more travel) are hopefully in his future.

Of his career at Port Chester High School coming to a close, Siena recalls a quote he heard from his father: “I never did a day of work in my life; it was all fun.”

The long-time teacher said he plans to keep in touch with friends and colleagues via the Internet, but in the meantime his farewell message is simple.

“Best wishes to all.... and keep smiling!”
