A Whole Lot of Summer Reading: Retired Teachers Deliver 300 Books to JFK Students

Led by a retired Port Chester teacher, a group of former educators hope JFK Magnet students spend part of their summer behind a good book.

A group of retired teachers have become familiar faces to the second-graders of John F. Kennedy Magnet School in Port Chester.

The seven teachers are members of the Westchester-Putnam chapter of NYSUT, or New York State United Teachers. They've "adopted" the young Port Chester students through a program designed to raise literacy and make sure the kids have everything they need for successful studies.

As the school year comes to a close, the group stopped by JFK Magnet School on Monday to deliver more than 300 soft-cover books. Some will be used in the classroom, while each child received two books each for their summer reading programs.

It was the latest stop at JFK for the retired teachers, who in September delivered 150 shoeboxes filled with school supplies and in December read poetry to the students while donating a poetry anthology for each child.

Doris Blank, a retired Port Chester teacher, leads the committee, which also includes retired teacher Rhoda Stephens of Hendrick Hudson; Suzanne Carlock of Southern Westchester BOCES; Roni O’Connor of Pelham; Mary Curtis of Irvington; Dolores Thompson of Mamaroneck; and Joan Traber of White Plains.
