Trustees to Meet Tonight: Speak Your Mind on Parking Meter Thefts

The board of trustees will meet at 7 p.m.

Port Chester's trustees will meet tonight at the Port Chester courthouse, and residents can weigh in on the parking meter thefts during a public comment period.

Although the the calendar on the village's website shows no meetings for tonight, the village clerk's office said trustees will meet at 7 p.m. at 350 North Main St.

The board is expecting an update on a pair of investigations -- police and administrative -- into money that was skimmed from Port Chester's parking meters. Port Chester officials are looking at ways to handle meter collections in the future, and in the meantime a private company has been contracted to handle the job for at least the next three months.

Contrary to media reports that have speculated on the amount of money that was stolen, Port Chester officials don't know how long employees have been stealing from the meters, and trustees say they may never know how much was stolen. Because they don't know how long employees have been skimming -- and some 100 meters were broken or inoperable for long stretches of time -- differences in collections on a week-by-week basis can't be attributed to theft alone.
