Trustees to Meet Tonight: Code Enforcement Discussion on Agenda

Republican trustees want to bring in contractors to help code enforcement staff catalog decades of old files.

With against and a series of revelations about the former building department, Port Chester's code enforcement efforts have made lots of headlines recently.

As the small code enforcement staff works its way through dating back decades, several trustees say they want to hire an outside firm to help.

Trustees Sam Terenzi and Bart Didden have floated and relieve code enforcement staff of at least most of the paperwork. Trustee Daniel Brakewood has also signaled support for the effort, which officials say would take inspectors out of the office and allow them to do their primary jobs -- inspect homes.

The proposal comes as the Department of Code Enforcement faces opposition on a new front, after so many years of alleged corruption. As inspectors work their way through 5,500 parcels and thousands of documents, they're also fielding sometimes-daily requests from negligent landlords who still believe there are ways to bypass the permit and inspection process.

Also on the agenda tonight: taxi litigation, and a public hearing on that haven't been popular among residents who now must move their cars every morning.
