Rye Town Interns Complete 6-Week Program

As the end of summer approaches, students taking part in internships are packing up from their temporary assignments and preparing to head back to school, In the Town of Rye, students are finishing up with the first Model American Summer Internship Program. 

Town described the program as an example of “the positive impact that can occur when the public sector reaches out to the community to understand the current problems – like youth employment – and works in partnership with the community to make the Town a Model American Community.”

The program matched 10 students with community organizations and houses of worship for the past six weeks.

The students worked at community organizations that have participated with the Town’s Model American Community Project including , Centro Christiano Nueva Vida Church, , the NAACP, St Frances AME Zion Church and the Town of Rye. 

The students participated in a job-readiness workshop which included classes on job search skills, resume writing and interviewing before taking on a variety of unique assignments. Some of the students worked with children and youth; others conducted research and some helped their organizations use social media.

The internship also featured three international mentors from Manhattanville College who met with the students to listen to their questions about workplace issues and to help them understand constructive ways to respond.
