Officials: Unauthorized Work Done on Port Chester Building, Engineers to Inspect Structure

Code enforcement officers discovered problem as they were inspecting a nearby building.

Port Chester is bringing in structural engineers to inspect a downtown building that may have been compromised by unauthorized work inside the building, according to Mayor Neil Pagano.

Adee Street between North Main Street and King Street is closed today as a precaution because of fears of possible building collapse.

Pagano said Port Chester code enforcement officers working Tuesday near the building involved discovered interior work that was being done without the required permits.

"Right away they realized it was a dangerous situation," Pagano said.

He noted that work on the facade of the building had been authorized by the village, but interior work was not. As a result of apparent structural problems with the building, Pagano said village shut the building and closed off the area — affecting sidewalk areas on North Main Street, Adee Street and King Street.

Pagano said upstairs apartments in the building were not occupied. Pagano said village officials were concerned that structural problems created in the building could affect adjacent buildings in the event of a collapse.
