Notice: Public Hearing on Group Home Proposal

Elected leaders want to hear from residents on the proposal to build a group home on Betsy Brown Road.

Are Port Chester's elected leaders emulating the "Not In My Backyard" snobbery of other municipalities, or are they looking out for their overtaxed constituents?

Those are questions that were raised last week during a trustee meeting, and in a here on Patch when readers reacted to news that a non-profit seeks to build a six-bedroom group home in the village.

Opponents say they applaud the group's mission, but oppose the plan because Port Chester is already "saturated" with group homes, nursing homes, churches and other non-taxable properties. Proponents say diversity is a hallmark of the village, and worry that opposition to the group home could be misconstrued.

Residents on both sides of the issue will have their chance to speak publicly on Jan. 17, when the Board of Trustees holds a public hearing on the proposal.

The public hearing is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. in the village courthouse, on 350 N. Main St. Click the attached thumbnail to view a copy of the announcement from the village clerk's office.
