No Winner Yet in District 6 Primary, Ballots Counted Late Into Night

Daniel Brakewood held an 85-vote lead over opponent Mark Jaffe when the county's Board of Elections released its last tally early on Wednesday morning.

District 6's contest between was among several primaries that hadn't yielded a winner Tuesday night and into Wednesday morning.

The last tally from the county's Board of Elections arrived at 12:30 a.m.; Port Chester Trustee Daniel Brakewood held an 85-vote lead over Harrison attorney Mark Jaffe.

The two Democrats ahead of the November election for the soon-to-be-vacant county legislature seat.

District 6 includes Port Chester, Rye Brook and Harrison. Brakewood and Jaffe launched their campaigns after long-time Legislator Marty Rogowsky at the end of this year and won't seek re-election.

After polls closed at 9 p.m. and election officials counted ballots from more than two dozen precincts, Brakewood led by a margin of almost 100 votes. He almost four hours later.

As of 1:30 a.m. Wednesday morning, votes from 35 of 39 precincts had been counted.

Earlier this year, when votes were tallied in the Port Chester mayoral election, Brakewood for fellow Democrat Dennis Pilla and stood on a table to congratulate the re-elected mayor in crowded Chavin restaurant. This time around, he watched the results in a more low-key setting, surrounded by family and key supporters in his Port Chester home.

Late Tuesday night, with 34 precincts reporting and his lead intact, Brakewood said he was "cautiously optimistic" about the results.

But a few minutes before midnight, waiting with supporters at his Westchester Avenue campaign office, Jaffe said he was confident he'd make up the vote difference.

Although unofficial Board of Election results on election night don't specify which districts remain, Jaffe said several of those yet-to-be-counted batches were from Harrison, his hometown.

"Hopefully," he said, "Harrison's coming out for Jaffe."
