Eleven years ago today the unthinkable happened.
Our world was forever changed by the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks at the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. Tonight, the nearly 3,000 lives lost in a ceremony set for 7 p.m. at Lyon Park.
Throughout Westchester County, 109 residents lost their lives as a result of the terrorist attacks. is having a twilight ceremony to honor those who died in the attacks at 7 p.m. at The Rising at Kensico Dam Plaza.
The Port Chester takes place at the at Lyon Park. Here's the program for the ceremony:
- Port Chester Mayor Dennis Pilla will deliver the opening remarks.
- Members of the American Legion with present the colors.
- Gabriella Buccieri will sing the National Anthem.
- Members of the Boy Scouts from Port Chester will lead the Pledge of Allegiance.
- The Rev. Hilario Albert will deliver the invocation.
- The mayor and the Port Chester Board of Trustees will place the memorial wreath, along with Port Chester Police Chief Joseph Krzeminski and Port Chester Fire Chief Kevin McFadden.
- Joe Sabia of the American Legion will play Taps.
- The Rev. Steve Schenck will deliver the benediction.
- Gabriella Buccieri will sing God Bless America, accompanied by Port Chester Girl Scouts.
In Port Chester schools, Port Chester High School students will be observing a moment of silence today to remember the 9/11 victims.
On the day of the attack, Port Chester, like many police departments in Westchester County, sent several police officers to Manhattan to provide whatever assistance they could for the city. In the attacks, 343 New York City firefighters were killed, along with 23 New York City police officers and 37 Port Authority of New York and New Jersey police officers.
