Gelfarb faces off against Daniel Brakewood, a Democrat and current Port Chester trustee. To read letters from Brakewood's supporters, click here and here. To read earlier letters in support of Gelfarb, click here.

Brakewood Would Be Beholden to Democrats, Not Voters

I understand that Dan Brakewood has some enthusiastic supporters, but in the process of turning out letters to endorse him they are painting a picture of a candidate who is desperately trying (unsuccessfully, I might add) to get some distance from the man who tells all legislators in his caucus what to do – County Legislative Majority Leader Ken Jenkins from Yonkers.

It is true that Mr. Brakewood has taken Ken Jenkins’ vendetta against County Executive Rob Astorino’s leadership to new heights – by demanding to abolish Mr. Astorino’s job. And giving to the legislature (i.e. Mr. Jenkins) the power to appoint someone to run the County. Really now, this is a bit too much. Mr. Jenkins is afraid of losing his super majority if Mr. Brakewood doesn’t win the election, and loses to Rye Town Councilman David Gelfarb.

I’ll give Mr. Brakewood credit for wanting to make Playland profitable, a position already proposed by County Legislature candidate David Gelfarb. This is the Astorino position, being fought every day by Ken Jenkins and his crew. We can appreciate why Mr. Brakewood and his followers would want to escape from the clutches of Mr. Jenkins. An argument can be made that retiring County Legislator Marty Rogowsky is quitting for the same reason. But the solution to this dilemma is NOT to vote for Mr. Brakewood. It is to vote for David Gelfarb and break Mr. Jenkins’ super majority in the County Legislature.

Vote Gelfarb for County Legislator

We write to endorse David Gelfarb for County Legislature. We first experienced David’s thoughtfulness, insight and negotiating skills in his positions as Treasurer and then President of the Belle Fair Homeowners Association. No problem was too large or too small for Mr. Gelfarb. He would investigate all concerns by assembling the facts and making responsible decisions. He went on to become a Rye Town Councilman who has reduced taxes every year while in office. His opponent, Dan Brakewood has actually RAISED taxes while he held office. We cannot afford any additional taxes! We are counting on David Gelfarb to bring his pragmatic, fiscally conservative style to Westchester County government.

During the recent Journal News and League of Women’s Voters debates Mr. Brakewood shared his plan to replace the County Executive position with an appointed professional manager and to eliminate over two-thirds of the Board of Legislators. Currently, the County Executive is elected in a democratic fashion by the voters of Westchester County. Well, Mr. Brakewood, we as a nation have progressed to a democratic way of life where in our collective voices are heard and we get to choose who governs us. If we do not like their performance, we do not re-elect them. Your plan is to have an oligarchy in power, which is elitist.

It was suggested in a letter to the the Westmore News (10/14/11), that Mr. Brakewood would be victorious over Mr. Gelfarb on the television program “Survivor” on CBS. This program features the winning contestants as they take part in an array of back-stabbing, forming in secret alliances, chicanery, trickery and greed. Are these the qualities Mr. Brakewood possesses? He is a mid-level manager paid to uncover inefficiencies in large corporations. It seems as if his very role is another layer of corporate waste and a by product of the corporate greed we want to avoid in government. In strong contrast, David Gelfarb is intelligent, pragmatic, resourceful and resilient. He is the only candidate that has a proven record of tax cutting. These qualities make him uniquely qualified to represent our voices and interests at the Westchester County level. Please join us in voting for David Gelfarb on November 8th.

Gelfarb Is A "Defender of the Taxpayer"

It is very rare for me to vote for a candidate versus voting against the other person.   On November 8th it is my pleasure to vote for David Gelfarb for County Legislator and Joe Carvin for Rye Town Supervisor.

I have walked with Gelfarb in Port Chester, Harrison and Rye Brook and here is the resounding theme from voters - regardless of political party or age: “we are being taxed to death”.

No other candidate has built a record of accomplishment over the last fours years in Rye Town than David Gelfarb and Joe Carvin.  Consider what they have done:

  • Cut the Town tax levy by 50%
  • Reduced the Town budget by $1 million
  • Increased the Town fund balance by 22%
  • Took the lead on local government restructuring
  • Eliminated lifetime benefits for part time elected officials

David Gelfarb has proven himself as being a bonafide defender of the tax payer.  I trust him to work with the County Executive to continue lessening the tax burden and transform county government.   He has consistently demonstrated his commitment to lower property taxes and government spending.

“Promises made, promises kept” best describes Team Carvin.  They earned four more years for delivering on taxes, spending and restoring the trust of Rye Town residents.  As the Receiver of Taxes candidate, Janusz Richards brings a wealth of experience and education to the role that I am sure will serve us well.

Our choice on November 8th is very clear: Vote Gelfarb and Team Carvin.

Joe Kenner, Port Chester Deputy Mayor
