Letter to the Editor: Gene Ceccarelli's 'Pre-Election Reflections'

During this campaign, all candidates – including yours truly – have been telling you how we can solve all of the village’s problems. It’s almost a shame that we cannot simply increase the board to 10, and watch all of our troubles disappear. But it is one thing to say something, and yet another to put words into action. 

We know that there are bright and hardworking individuals on our current board of trustees – including the mayor. I could not have said it better than Mr. Denis Ahearn Sr. in his letter to the editor of the Westmore News (Friday, 3/1/13). I was immediately left with the impression that our elected officials are human beings just like us, who make mistakes and sacrifice an enormous amount of their time for the greater good. And as much as I have disagreed with some of the candidates on certain issues, I will always give each and every one of them credit and my utmost respect for being in the “arena.” 

 Opposing points of view are necessary to better sift out all sides of a matter.

But as we have seen from the highest to the lowest levels of government, endless arguments, party politics, and outdoing the next guy/gal seems to be the norm. This is non-productive and a disservice to the people they represent and serve. And this is one of the common themes that I hear from many of the Port Chester folks that I meet while campaigning.

Most of you have gotten to know me personally, or through my many public appearances at Board of Trustees’ meetings, or through my articles and the articles about me in the press. My resume and my positions are clearly stated on my campaign card. (If you do not have one, please call me at 914-937-3416. I will gladly deliver one to your home.) I hope that I can count on you for one or more of your six votes. You will not get a perfect person, but you will get someone who will work honestly and hard to improve our Village with the mayor and five other trustees.

There is a lot at stake in the coming years ahead, and the issues have been widely publicized. I will not repeat them here. As the saying goes “We’re all in this together,” and I believe that together (all of us) we can come up with the most practical and productive ways to continue “making Port Chester a better place!”
