Inspectors Complete Preliminary Review After Main St. Fire, Plan to Re-Visit Site
Code enforcement staff hope to take a closer look at the property before compiling a final report.
Housing inspectors have completed a preliminary review of the North Main Street building that caught fire last week, and they plan to return to the building this week for a more detailed look, according to Assistant Village Manager Christopher Steers.
The fire at 44-48 N. Main St. was caused by electrical problems, according to preliminary findings. In an e-mail to village hall staff last week, Steers cited "dozens upon dozens of fire safety and building code violations including multiple electrical hazards and possible illegal units."
Among the details that emerged after the fire: The owner had allegedlyignored a series of safety inspection notices dating back to the summer of 2010, according to the Department of Code Enforcement.

The next update will likely come on Monday, when the Board of Trustees meets at the village courthouse. In the meantime, housing inspectors will revisit the North Main Street building for a more detailed look now that they've had almost a week to review the paperwork history of that property.
"We are conducting another walkthrough of the building on Thursday to compare what’s there to what we have on record as being permitted," Steers wrote in response to a Patch inquiry.
