Village manager: Areas prone to flooded targeted for evacuation.

9:15 AM MONDAY: Due to weather conditions from Hurricane Sandy this year’s Port Chester Halloween in the Park Event that was rescheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 30 has been cancelled.

Port Chester's village manager has signed a declarartion of emergency with the approach of Hurricane Sandy and an evacuation order, both set to go into effect tonight at 7 p.m.

Port Chester Village Manager Christopher Steers said the village is spreading word of the emergency declaration and evacuation order on the web and through public access television. He said police will also be notifying residents of the affected neighborhoods.

The evacuation order covers low lying areas of the village historically susceptible to flooding:

1.Riverdale Avenue from Putnam Avenue to the Town of Greenwich boundary line.
2. Grey Rock South
3. North Main Street (river side) from Mill Street to Town of Greenwich boundary line

In advance of the arrival of Hurricane Sandy, the Red Cross has opened an emergency shelter at Port Chester High School.

Village Hall will be open from 9 a.m. to noon on Monday. However, only essential personnel will be called in to work.

The approach of Hurricane Sandy has also led to the cancellation of Sunday night's show at The Capitol Theater in Port Chester.

"Due to the arrival of Hurricane Sandy and New York City’s decision to cancel public transportation, tonight’s Trey Anastasio Band concert at The Capitol Theatre will not take place," said a notice by the theatre. "It will be rescheduled for Monday, Nov. 5. All tickets for tonight’s show will be honored next Monday."

Early garbage pickup for Monday in Port Chester began Sunday after 4 p.m. There will be no Bulk waste pick upon Wednesday, and Port Chester residents are asked not to put out trash or recyclables on Monday or Tuesday.

Linda T., I would guess Mrs. Brakewood lives in Port Chester if she is running for the Port ChesterRead More Board of Ed. Even if the schools had to impose an austerity budget, your taxes would still go up. The state has more control in these matters than you think.

Linda, the per pupil expenditure in PC schools is the lowest in Westchester and Rockland countiesRead More ... by about $2,000 per student. The issue is two fold. First, our property values are not as strong as our neighbors, so our homes have a higher levy in order to fund the schools. Second, and more important, is that the reliance on property taxes slams moderate income communities like PC. We need for the state to move to an income tax to fund schools. Scream at your legislators ... not the BoE.

I am concerned there is not enough attention to detail in the BOE budget overall and Mrs. BrakewoodRead More comment about keeping taxes affordable ... where does she live ? they are out of control and in my opinion the money we pay for taxes we should have the best looking schools anywhere ... just my opinion
