More than 450 Hudson Valley-based New York Army National Guard Soldiers have deployed from Fort Bliss, Texas, to Afghanistan, where they will provide communications support to American and coalition forces in that country.
The soldiers of the 101st Expeditionary Signal Battalion left New York for Camp Shelby to complete their deployment training on Aug. 19. The battalion's soldiers flew out of Camp Shelby for their deployment location this week following the completion of post-mobilization training.
The battalion, which trains at armories in Yonkers, Peekskill and Orangeburg, will provide satellite communications support using the Army's Warfighter Information Network-Tactical (WIN-T). The soldiers are scheduled to return from deployment in the spring of 2013.
About 1,700 New York Army National Guard soldiers are deployed in Kuwait and Afghanistan.
