Village Court: Serial Burglar Has Immigration Issues And Bank Fraud Suspect A No-Show

A glimpse inside our headquarters of justice in Port Chester.

Here's a look at what happened during Port Chester Court's Sept. 2nd session. Court is in session every Monday, Thursday and Friday.

A young Port Chester resident described by police as a "one-man crime spree" was in court Thursday to answer to multiple counts of burglary and possession of stolen property.

Byron Chavarria, 20, of Orchard Street has been charged with two recent residential burglaries and is a suspect in at least two others. Chavarria was arrested Aug. 30 after the neighbors of a burglary victim on Willett Avenue spotted him leaving the building and later identified him to police.

Chavarria is accused of stealing jewelry from the Willett Avenue apartment and taking woman's underwear, jewelry and a computer from a Locust Avenue residence. Police found the stolen items, along with iPods and other jewelry, in the suspect's apartment.

Chavarria's legal aid attorney on Thursday said the severity of the case could ultimately send it to county court. He also told Judge Jose Castaneda that Chavarria is the subject of an Immigration and Customs Enforcement 'detainer', meaning there is an issue with his immigration status and he will be remanded to federal custody upon being released by the county.

The case was adjourned to Sept. 9.

Suspect in Bank Fraud Case Skips Court

A Bronx man accused of attempting to fraudulently withdraw more than $3,000 from a local bank failed to show up in court Thursday.

David Valerio, 23, was arrested Aug. 2 as he fled the TD Bank on Boston Post Road. He approached a teller at the bank with a fake New Jersey driver's license and a withdraw slip for $3,300.

The teller noticed a distinctive scar on Valerio's neck that had been mentioned in a company memo about a similar incident at a TD Bank branch in Rye. She stepped away from the window and called police, who tracked Valerio down a couple blocks from the bank.

Valerio is charged with felony grand larceny, felony possession of a forged instrument and misdemeanor  criminal impersonation. He was released on $1,500 bail, which Judge Castaneda forfeited Thursday when Valerio failed to show. In other words, he can't get the cash back even if he eventually shows up in court.

A warrant has been issued for his arrest.
