Upstate Driver Charged With DWI In State Police Saturation Detail in Westchester County

Roving patrols stop 13 others for speeding, seatbelt and other violations.

An Upstate New York man was charged with drunken driving and 13 others were issued tickets Saturday in a special State Police effort to crackdown on DWI.

The roving detail was conducted throughout Westchester County by the State Police as they and local police departments throughout the area stepped up efforts to get drunken drivers off the roads.

Police said Ernest A. Newsom, 33, of Utica,was stopped on the Sprain Brook Parkway for speeding — driving 83 mph in the 55 mph zone — in Yonkers. Police said Newsom was found to be intoxicated and he was taken to the State Police barracks in Hawthorne, where he then failed a chemical breath test for alcohol.

Newsom was later released pending a March 28 hearing in Yonkers City Court.
