Port Chester Police are reminding residents to take the simple precaution of locking their car doors in the wake of a new rash of thefts in which a thief is specifically looking for cars left open.
In rash of incidents this week, police said at least four cars in the same Port Chester neighborhood were entered by a thief who rummaged through the vehicles looking for small items and cash that could be stolen. Although the cars were not damaged, police said residents reported numerous items stolen.
The cars had all been left open and were parked in the driveways of homes.
- A 44-year-old woman reported that someone rummaged through her car on Upland Street, taking a $900 watch that had been in the glove compartment, as well as some coins that were in the car.
- A 54-year-old woman reported that somone rummaged through her car on Pilgrim Drive and stole a small ice hockey game that was in the car.
- A 54-year-old man reported that someone rummaged through two cars in his driveway and stole two wireless headsets worth $150 each and a box of cigars worth $350.
Port Chester police urge residents to lock their cars whenever the vehicles are unattended — even in the driveway at home.
