Stamford Man Dies Outside Bar, Autopsy Scheduled

With no clear signs of life-threatening injuries on the victim's body, police will look to an autopsy scheduled for Tuesday for answers in their investigation.

Police are awaiting the results of an autopsy in the death of a Stamford man who was found outside a Port Chester bar early this morning.

Officers were called to a parking lot at the intersection of Adee and King streets at 4:05 a.m. after reports of a noise disturbance and a possible fight. That's where they found 41-year-old Gilberto Barrera-Hernandez laying on the ground, Lt. James Ladeairous said.

Barrera-Hernandez was breathing but unconscious, according to police, but there were no signs of physical trauma aside from a small cut on his arm that wasn't life-threatening.

Police called an ambulance, which transported Barrera-Hernandez to Greenwich Hospital in Connecticut. The victim went into cardiac arrest a short while later and was pronounced dead at the hospital.

At this point, police aren't sure if Barrera-Hernandez suffered injuries in a possible confrontation, or whether he died from other causes. An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday by the Fairfield County Medical Examiner.

Drinking establishments must close at 4 a.m., according to New York State law, and Port Chester is a popular destination for Connecticut residents who are looking to continue partying late into the night after bars in their state close at 2 a.m. Like other Port Chester spots, the Broad Street bar is a short hop over the border for Connecticut revelers who don't want to end their night at 2 a.m.

Police said the bar had finished last call, and patrons were walking away and widely scattered by the time officers arrived on scene. Detectives had interviewed several people nearby early this morning, but police said details were few and departing bar customers couldn't shed light on what happened to the victim.

Barrera-Hernandez' family had been notified of the death earlier today, Ladeairous said.

Anyone who was in the area this morning or may have witnessed a confrontation near Marty's Bar is asked to call the Port Chester Police Department at 914-939-1000. All calls will be kept confidential.
