Social Security, Green Cards Taken In Port Chester Burglary

The burglar took the cards from nightstand drawer, but left everything else in the apartment untouched.

A woman and her son fear someone intends to use or sell their identities after their green cards and Social Security cards were stolen in a burglary this week, Port Chester police said.

Both the 41-year-old mother and 17-year-old son were out of their West Street apartment for most of the day Wednesday. The son was at school, while his mother was at work.

The son returned from school at 5 p.m. and told police he fell asleep around 8 p.m.; his mother briefly returned to the apartment at 9 p.m. and saw cracked molding on the front door, but didn't think anything of it because the inside of the apartment hadn't been disturbed, police said.

On Thursday, the mother noticed items had been taken from the top drawer of a nightstand, including green cards, Social Security cards and jewelry. They reported the burglary to police a short time later, Lt. James Ladeairous said.

The victims are from India and have permanent residence in the U.S.

Anyone with information about the break-in can call the Port Chester Police Department at 914-939-1000.
