Port Chester Man Accused of Hitting 4-Year-Old Son

Police: Dad, putting sneakers on child, gets upset when boy struggles.

A Port Chester man has been charged with assault after hitting his 4-year-old son in the face for struggling as the dad was putting on the child's sneakers, according to Port Chester Police.

David Barriga, 38, of 316 Westchester Ave., was charged with third-degree assault after village police investigated a 5:30 p.m. report on Tuesday that a man was hitting a child at 316 Westchester Ave.

Police said that as village officers arrived, the 4-year-old's mother told police that Barriga became upset when the boy struggled as the father was putting on the child's sneakers. Police said Barriga is accused of hitting the child in the face at least three times.

The boy, police said, had bruising and swelling on his face and emergency medical personnel were called to treat the child. The boy was taken to Greenwich Hospital for evaluation and further treatment.

Barriga was arrested and later ordered held in the Westchester County Jail in Valhalla on $750 bail pending a hearing today in Port Chester Village Court.
