UPDATE: Olivia St. Fire Caused By Open-Flame Soldering Work

No one injured in blaze at house on Olivia Street; fire believed to be related to plumbing work.

A basement fire at an Olivia Street home began when a contractor used an open flame to solder old pipes, authorities said.

The Port Chester Fire Department responded to 259 Olivia St. at 6:20 p.m. Firefighters worked quickly, ushering several residents out of the home before attacking the fire. Authorities weren't sure how many people lived in the multi-family home; no one was injured.

Several men were conducting makeshift plumbing repairs to old pipes in the basement when nearby materials caught fire, Chief Kevin McFadden said.

The fire spread to a wall and began spreading toward the first floor of the home, but firefighters were able to bring the blaze under control within about 10 minutes, McFadden said.

The home is located on the corner of Olivia and Washington streets, across from John F. Kennedy Magnet School. Traffic was redirected around the street for more than an hour Thursday evening.

More than 40 firefighters responded to the call. They were assisted by the Port Chester Police Department and paramedics.

Inspectors from Port Chester's Department of Code Enforcement were on-scene as firefighters were winding down their efforts at the home. Several satellite dishes were visible on the eave of a first-floor roof. The village is expected to conduct an investigation into possible illegal housing conditions at the home.
