Police: Two Dozen Car Break-Ins Reported in August

Police urge residents to lock their cars and call if they see or hear suspicious activity.

Port Chester police want residents to call them if they see or hear suspicious late-night activity as they try to catch the person or people responsible for a rash of recent car break-ins.

Through 10 days in August, police have fielded a total of 24 reports of car break-ins, with "95 percent involving vehicles left unlocked," Lt. James Ladeairous said.

The pattern is different from similar streaks village police have seen in the past -- where most car break-ins are reported from the commercial districts and the waterfront parking lots, the majority of recent reports have come from residential streets.

Most of the cases involve cars parked in residential driveways, with the usual gadgets and items stolen: GPS units, iPods, a laptop, sunglasses and, in one case, a box containing $500 in rolled-up quarters, Ladeairous said.

Police urge residents to lock their cars and remove valuables before heading in for the night. Residents "shouldn't hesitate" to report suspicious activity, Ladeairous said.
