Police: Two Burglaries, and More Break-Ins at Ballys Gym Lockers

In one burglary, thieves struck a private home. In the other, burglars made off with thousands in networking and telephony wires.

A laptop, a Nintendo Wii and a "purse collection" worth $5,000 were stolen from a Leonard Street home this weekend, Port Chester police said.

Tenants of a second-floor apartment called police early Sunday evening after they came home and realized someone had broken in, Lt. James Ladeairous said. The victims told police they'd left Friday and returned Sunday, when they found an open window and a sliced screen.

In addition to the purses, the Wii and games ($500), and the laptop ($800), the victims said thieves had stolen a 24-inch TV, a Playstation 3, several watches valued at $1,500 total, and a few pairs of sneakers. In all, about $9,000 in belongings were stolen from the home. Police are investigating.

Burglars Steal Lots and Lots of Wire

In an unrelated burglary, $3,500 in networking and telephony wiring was stolen from a Verizon building on Sunday night, Port Chester police said.

Employees told police they left at 8 p.m. Sunday and returned at 9 a.m. Monday morning, when they realized the wires were missing. There was no sign of forced entry to the building.

Stolen from the 45 Ryan Avenue building was 15 cases of copper drop wire, 10 cases of Cat-5 copper wire, 20 reels of green 10-gauge copper wire, and 15 reels of gray copper wire, Ladeairous said.

A "cage" area that housed the wires was left open. Detectives are investigating.

Thieves Get Workout in Gym Locker Room

An iPod and cash were stolen from two lockers at Bally's gym over the weekend, two weeks after thieves relieved two people of $1,600 at the same gym.

Police were called to the 260 Boston Post Road gym at 11 a.m. on Sunday. A Greenwich man told officers he'd placed an iPod in a locker and came back after working out to find the hinges pried open and the mp3 player missing.

About 40 minutes later, a Rye man came back from a workout and found the door to his locker broken. He told police $180 in his wallet was missing, Lt. James Ladeairous said.

On July 26, there were two thefts from the men's locker room in the same gym. The victims told police they'd locked up their wallets and came back only 20 minutes later to find the wallets still there, but their cash missing. One man lost $1,500 and the other lost $100. In that incident, there was no sign of forced entry to the locker, Ladeairous said.
