Police: Three Port Chester Stores Sold Alcohol To Minor

Two stores sold six-packs of beer to an 18-year-old student, while a third store sold a bottle of merlot, according to police.

Three out of seven Port Chester stores sold beer or wine to an underage student this month, according to Port Chester police, who teamed with the county to conduct compliance checks on alcohol sales.

Detectives from Port Chester and Westchester County sent an 18-year-old criminal justice student into seven randomly-selected stores on Jan. 19.

At 6 p.m., a clerk at Irv's Mini Mart sold a six-pack of Coors bottles to the underage student. The clerk at the 234 Westchester Ave. store didn't ask for identification, Lt. James Ladeairous said.

At 7:40 p.m., a clerk at Belozzi Deli sold a six-pack of Coors to the student. The clerk at the 197 Westchester Ave. store asked for ID, looked at the man's license -- which had his correct date of birth, listing him at 18 years old -- and sold the beer anyway, Ladeairous said.

At 8 p.m., the student selected a bottle of red wine and went up to the counter at , at 30 Westchester Ave. The clerk asked for a license, then for a second form of identification, but sold the bottle of wine to the underage student anyway, according to police.

All three clerks were charged with unclassified misdemeanors for violating the state's alcoholic beverage control (ABC) laws. They were given appearance tickets and are scheduled for hearings with the state Liquor Authority on Feb. 17.
