Police: Suspected Shoplifter Gets Away One Day, Caught the Next

A homeless man suspected of shoplifting at a Port Chester store got away from security officers on Friday but was arrested on Saturday after he went back to the same store, according to Port Chester Police.

Larry Johnson, 54, who has no known address, is charged with petty larceny in connection with two incidents at Marshalls, 20 Waterfront Place, police said. He was arrested about 5:30 p.m. Saturday just a few minutes after Marshalls workers spotted him again taking merchandise from the store, police said.

Johnson, police said, was first spotted at Marshalls at about 4 p.m. on Friday. Store workers told police they saw him via security camera put merchandise under his coat. However, Johnson made it out of the store before he could be stopped, police said.

After that incident, village police officers had a picture of the man involved in Friday's incident made from the security video. Police said that when Johnson return to Marshalls on Saturday, he again got away from the store but was stopped a short distance away by police on Traverse Avenue.

Police said that when Johnson was stopped he was found with a $40 pair of sneakers taken from Marshalls and a tool used to remove tags from store merchandise. In addition to petty larceny, he was charged with possession of burglar's tools.

Johnson faces a hearing in Port Chester Village Court.
